The Staten Island Chapter of the Third Order of St. Dominic is becoming an official part of our parish family effective immediately. They’ve been meeting in St. Teresa’s convent for a number of years and will now be a parish activity.
The group gathers in the convent on the third Saturday from 12:30 pm to 4:00
pm. If you’d like to see what they’re all a bout, you’re welcome to attend a
meeting. For additional information call Pat Van Houten at 1-718-761-1828. |
A GIFT Every lector I the Parish has been given a lector’s workbook for this year donated by St. Teresa’s lay Dominicans. We’re most grateful. When you want to pray, are you distracted by thoughts of what you’re planning to do next, what goodies the dinner meal will include, who BBQ’s best, which digital camera to buy, what music to download on your ipod, who’s on My Space, and on and on? At the next meeting of the lay Domincans on Saturday, May 19, new members and guests will learn a method quieting distractions, not by reading about it but by actually doing it. As Pat Van Houten said at their last meeting, “We don’t learn prayer the way we learn history, geography and math – by reading books. We learn by doing.” If you’re interested, call Pat at 718-761-1828 and/or just come to St. Teresa’s Convent at 11:50 am on Saturday, May 19. The meeting will start promptly at 12 noon. All are welcome.

LAY DOMINICANS In a sharing at the last meeting on Luke 4:16-30, the question was posed of what tools we have to defend our Catholic faith. There was a lively and informative discussion of many tools. One is the courage to discuss our faith in conversation. Another is having the humility as well as the courage to listen to the arguments of those with whom we disagree and take them seriously. Our present Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, is giving us a model of listening. After the controversy over his lecture last September, he listened to some Islamic leaders. Then, when he was in Turkey in November, he visited a mosque tin Istanbul for reflection and prayer. As a result, our Holy Father’s talks on Christian tradition are now being given calmer and wider attention.
One of the fruits of this type of Bible
sharing is a bonding in faith among the sharers. St. Teresa’s lay Dominicans
have similar discussions at each of their monthly meetings. If you’re
interested in joining them, call Pat Van Houten at 1-718-761-1828. |
